Ways to Treat Insomnia
There are a lot of horrible things in life, but when you can’t sleep, it is often impossible to think of anything worse. Not being able to sleep when you are exhausted, stressed, wanting a good night’s rest for tomorrow, etc., is so frustrating that if you’ve ever experienced it…you don’t need me to say anything more about how BAD it can be.
Instead, you are here to find ways to help insomnia and finally fix your sleeping issues so that you NEVER have to feel that awful feeling again. And instead, can go to bed, sleep like a baby and feel rested the next day.
Seems like a pipe dream, doesn’t it?
I understand completely!
But curing insomnia, regardless of the cause, is absolutely possible. The trick is to first, figure out what it is that is keeping you up and FIX that. That will usually be all you need in order to cure your insomnia problems.
However, it is often more than one factor that might be the culprit and even after you fix one thing, it is possible for other issues to arise in the future that might start the vicious cycle all over again.
The solution?
Live a balanced life.
Learn your relaxation trigger.
Take care of yourself.
And be consistent.
Spontaneity is great, and it may be the spice of life. But for a good night’s rest, you need a calming routine. You also need to make sure that you don’t have a health issue that is the reason for your insomnia.
Health Issues That Can Cause Insomnia
– Worry
– Stress
– Menopause Insomnia
– RLS Restless Leg Syndrome
– Heart Palpitations
– Hot flashes
To name a few…another issue that isn’t really a health issue but is a HUGE reason for insomnia is not having a good sleep pattern. Take it from a night owl who has learned this and defied this until I could no longer argue with the experts.
Not having a set sleep schedule routine will cause insomnia. It’s just a fact, because…you AREN’T tired. If you were tired, most of the time you are going to be able to sleep. Sometimes, yes I’ll agree that there are times when I’ve experienced the “too tired to fall asleep problem”, when it seems your body is exhausted but your mind just won’t shut off.
Sometimes in those cases medication of some sort might be necessary, unless you can simply accept that you can’t sleep and can get up and just do something until you are ready to sleep. Simple solution, one most of us typically won’t try, because WE WANT TO SLEEP and not be exhausted the next morning.
But hey, if you can’t sleep. You can’t sleep, and as I learned in How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, everyone is different and while there is a standard of what humans need, not everyone is the same and YOU CAN SURVIVE without sleep. So don’t stress about it, and most likely you’ll fall asleep because you stopped FIGHTING the fact that you couldn’t sleep.
Okay, on to some solutions if you CANNOT sleep at night.
Home Remedies for Sleeplessness:
– Go to sleep at the same time every night, and wake at the same time every morning – even on the weekends
– Drink warm milk before bed
– Turn off all electronic devices at least a half hour before bed (including T.V.- don’t watch the news)
– Take a bath
– Don’t work before bedtime
– Don’t exercise at night
– Listen to relaxing music for sleep
– Meditate 30 minutes before bed, for 5 minutes
– Write in a journal (get things off your chest, and off your mind)
– Read a book until you get tired
Medications for Sleep:
Some people will turn to prescriptions (I say, use as a last resort)
Instead I recommend:
– Melatonin – take 30 minutes to 1 hour before bed (take with Vitamin D and Calcium/Magnesium)
– Benedryl (or ZzzQuil – guess what? it’s the same thing) – take 30 minutes to one hour before bed
– Chamomile
I have found for myself that stress, worry and not keeping a consistent sleep schedule are the major causes for my insomnia. That and stimulants consumed too late in the day. Be sure to limit your caffeine intake and alcohol intake if you want to make sure you are able to sleep at night.
Another issue that can be a HUGE problem for sleep is a hormonal imbalance, including menopause symptoms. However, even if you aren’t experiencing menopause, women in their younger years can still experience hormonal imbalances that can cause restless leg syndrome and heart palpitations. I will be writing an article soon specific to these symptoms and how you can balance your body and finally get some rest.
Please leave me a comment below if you are experiencing insomnia – if my above recommendations don’t help, I’m sure we can find something for you that will!
